Faces of Industry: Willy Crosina

This morning I took a photo of the legendary Willy Crosina. Willy is well known in these parts of the Province for his dedication and involvement in rodeo’s all over BC and perhaps other parts as well. He’s also the name behind Willy’s Western Wear, located downtown Williams Lake. He is 87 now and still going strong. “I was a rodeo clown at the age of 40. I did that for 5 or 6 years. I never let anyone get injured and I was never hurt myself.”

The Stew Cover

I had the wonderful opportunity to shoot the cover for the November issue of The Stew Magazine. Simple concept and simple set-up. Thanks to Todd and Julie for letting me do this, and Sam Numsen for modelling for the afternoon.

Introverted Spaces

I was out scouting some locations for an upcoming model test shoot today.

My Misfortunes with External HD’s and Other Things

Saturday, the inevitable happened yet again. I broke another External HD. To be more precise, the second hard drive that I’ve busted — not on purpose, of course. I was doing some clean up around my desk and my hand, full of items that I was discarding, bumped into my large, rectangular shaped and upright HD, sending it over the edge and onto a side table beside it. The thing is, it was may a 6 inch fall, but it was enough to reduce it to a useless large, rectangular shaped and upright HD. I was upset for about 5 minutes, doing anything in my power to revive the damaged goods. This of course included jiggling the cable, propping the HD on its other side and unplugging and plugging after counting to 5, then 10 and so on. Useless. Yes, this is my second External HD. My third in total. My first one was stolen out of my friends truck downtown Victoria. I hope buddy enjoyed that. My second HD, a gift from a couple whose wedding I photographed in 2009, was victim to having the cable become loose and no longer be read. I can save that one, and while typing this; I probably should.

This is of course, something that happens. Lesson: External HD’s don’t skydive.

In the meantime, I’m in the early stages of getting my photography project into full swing. I was interviewed last week by one of the local newspapers and they did a nice little article about it as well, and an open call to those who would love to participate. The series is going to be titled ‘Faces of Industry’ and is going to be portraits of the men and women who work in our industrial parks, ranches, farms, etc. The faces of the people who keep this town operating. I live in a small town that has faced hardships in the past and it’s these jobs that keep our economy pumping. The jobs aren’t easy and sometimes deadly. I worked for a couple of years in an open pit copper mine myself and dealt with breathing in dust, reagents and nearly losing my own hand. This project is going to be a ‘hat’s off’ to those people and I’m hoping it will be a huge community success.

So, that’s pretty much it. Busted HD and a wicked portrait series on the way.

I usually post a photo or two — or 10. But nothing as of late. Developing rolls tomorrow though. Here’s some awesome new music that I’ve been listening to:

35mm Half Frame

I recently borrowed a 35mm Half Frame camera from a fellow photographer in town. I am in love with it!

Keeping Records

Among other things, you’ll find that you’re not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You’re by no means alone on that score, you’ll be excited andstimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You’ll learn from them – if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It’s a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn’t education. It’s history. It’s poetry.

I Taught Myself How to Grow Old

Yeah, I named this blog after a song that I really love by Ryan Adams. But it’s fitting with the images. The 2nd chorus of the song ends with the lines ‘Now I’m crooked on the outside, insides caved.’ It only makes sense.
